Yo Eric,
I don't know about the RGB stuff but for press/inkjet profiles, you'll
see a big jump in quality going from a 400-500 patch chart (TC3.5) to
something like the 900+ patch IT8.7/3 chart. Jumping from the IT8 to
the ECI2002 (abouut 1,500 patches) chart gives you slightly better
results but with diminishing returns. The only significant difference
I've see going with the higher patch counts is slightly better
rendering of highlight detail, something like .5% better, and a bit
more accurate color. Frankly, I've actually gotten BETTER/smoother
shadow detail rendering when I use the TC3.5 target for the destination
profile and either the IT8/ECI2002 for the source profile. (Go figure).
