images as EPS for placement in CM documents

When is it proper to use EPS format?

Is it ever a good move to save photos/images as EPS for placement into InDesign or Quark?

I always thought EPS was much more an Illustrator or Freehand format for saving graphics out for placement into InDesign or Quark.

Has EPS lost some of its lustre in the days of faster machines, more RAM, and CM?

Thanks,
