This is for the "hmmm" files...
Our laser printer gave up the ghost last week and so I started messing around with OS X (10.3) printing stuff in order to press one of our many inkjets into short-term service... along the way I found a few things that raised my eyebrows and got me wondering if I already knew this stuff or..
Anyway, the first thing I did was get into the CUPS configuration stuff (just go to localhost:631 in Safari). I dove into the Epson 960 queue that OS X had setup and reminded myself of all the configuration options that were available (this is for the GIMP-Print driver not the Epson driver). The ones that caught my eye were where the ink type could be set to 4 color and the output type set to raw CMYK.
So I selected these and tried to print CMYK to the printer (using the K-channel CMYK file test) but it still reseparated in into a 4 color black. So I printed a test page and the config page said that there was a postscript interpreter connected. Right! I thought, OS X can do that stuff now, cool. So I created a new printer in OS X as an IP printer through LPR and pointed at localhost using generic postscript. So the postscript driver sends print jobs to LPR and they get directed to the Epson 960's queue.
Damned if I can't print CMYK straight out to the Epson 960 now.
So we setup our other OS 10 machines to LPR to the machine and we're all printing postscript to it across the network (and through a router which is why we couldn't just "share" the printer)
This stuff is very cool. I have yet to experiment with profiling the printer this way or try any other funky settings but there are enough bits and pieces here to keep a print geek busy for a while.
Am I in the slow boat on this stuff? Has anyone else found these things and gone further with it?
It's nice to know an old G3 sitting in the corner can be configured as a multi-queue print serving and postscript interpreting print system with just standard OS 10.3 on it.
Regards,
Steve
