Canned Epson Profiles and black point

Hi,

I was wondering if the group could tell me how Epson arrives at the Lab value for the black point of their canned profiles?

I have made a profile using i1, PM 4.5.1 on a dye based Epson printer using Epson HW matt paper, NCA in the driver, printed same as source in photoshop as usual. The measure Lab value of the black patch was 11.4, 0.3,-0.6

When I softproof ((Rel Col, BPC on) a file with detailed green foliage in shadow I see a compression of the shadow info into the gamut of the printer and a resulting loss of contrast and detail in these areas.

I was showing these out of gamut colors to a client, by using Colorthink. I was interested in what the softproof using a canned profile would be like and so loaded the canned profile into Colorthink for comparison. I noted that the shape and volume of the profiles was similar but that the black point for their profile was Lab 0,0,0.

I then looked at their other profiles in the set and they all had the same black point, even their plain inkjet paper. I assume this is contrived.

Does Epson automatically set their black point to 0,0,0 in all their profiles and if so How?
The alarming thing is that the softproof (and print) looks much better in terms of shadow detail and shadow tonal compression than the profile I made, although my colour looks better elsewhere.

Any clues here?

Thanks

Simon
