How? Using what software? Using what smart CMM?

Why Chris, I'm surprised you need to ask :-). I use the software I've
written (Argyll) to do these sorts of things.

Never heard of it. Where can I find a demo?

Have a look here:

Graeme did a fantasic job! (Thank you, I've lerned a lot by using your work)
But you have to know what you do, because the real interesting things are in source code.

Maybe one day he will post a project for Mac X-Tools (I hope).

In terms of commercial offerings, it seems that Microsoft (of all
people) are further down the track to standardizing this sort of approach,
rather than the usual suspects such as Apple, Adobe or the ICC.

While that may be true, it's totally out of scope for the current discussion which is expressly about ICC profiles, ICC-based CMMs, and the need for black point compensation, today, in all CMMs. That they also need other things is a different discussion.
