Ironically you've captured the intent precisely.

We don't want users to think about color management. We want it to be automatic. Some bugs not withstanding, this is in place in Panther. For those that do want to think about it, see the developer web site.

Hi John,

the advantage of the color management section on the Microsoft website is
that it is straightforward and provides a very good (and pretty
comprehensive) starting point. There seems to be a gap in this direction
on the Apple website. Why is it I have to learn through this mailing list
that the assumed RGB profile is Generic RGB? This is not good. If there
were a thorough and concise description on Apple's website exactly how
color management/ColorSync works on OS/X, and what the meaning of
settings in the ColorSync utility are and how they do affect what we'd
still have areas where we might not agree (and some will say that this or
that is conceptually broken), but we'd at least know with confidence what
it is we do not agree upon.

If experts have to guess something is seriously in bad shape. What about
ordinary users?

Again and again I can't rid myself of the impression that OS/X has
wonderful stuff under its hood, but except the engineers having
implemented it hardly anybody else knows about it or completely
understands the inner workings of it. And yes, please also let us know
about limitations and bugs.

Not everybody will agree that the way Microsoft does color management is
the best or even a goood way, but the quality of the documentation on
their website really is excellent.

The Apple web site has quite a bit of info on color. Visit
developer.apple.com and search on ColorSync.

We also understand that Microsoft has recognized the limitations of
sRGB, and has (as recently as WINHEC last month), made steps to remedy
this, and move beyond sRGB as a default space. BTW, apparently this
includes ICCv4 adoption.

So, is Microsoft taking the lead as far as color management is
concerned
these days? How come the Apple web site does not have such a wealthy
section
on color management (as MS does) and, yet, you were there way before
them?
