Roger:
I know it seems like trying to make a diamond out of glass. But, it isn't
as bad as you might think. I have had the Okidata and Xerox beside each
other and the Oki definitely has a larger Gamut (I still have the VERY GOOD
custom profile I made) but you could see the dot structure and that took
away all the extra gamut added. However, as an aside, the Oki had a
straight paper path, unlike the Xerox and that allows for thicker stock.
Anyway, I am doing Press Proofing on the 9600 and before printing Final
8-up Impositions at 25x38, it would be a good and cost effective (not to
mention saving time) route to print on the Xerox first--a page here; a page
there. If Color Management is working properly, I SHOULD be able to show
someone a Xerox Print and it not be too unlike the Epson, as color goes. Is
not that the whole point of color management?
Plus I think that's the BEST way to show 'real world' folk, that it DOES
work. The two prints should speak to that.
As to the device link profile, I figured since the software can create them
and it's only for my 'closed system', why not take advantage of what I
already have. That little bit extra is what we all strive for; that can
give us that little bit of edge that is often needed. BestColor is going to
add Device Link Profile support to their software in a future release
(don't quote me). My points that if these things do actually work and can
make thinks 'mo' better' <smile>, then lets use them, hopefully it will
catch on.
I did inspect the gamut and it ain't no stadium. But, it isn't that far off
from the typical press profile and that is the gamut of my proofs. So, no,
I am not trying to recreate Large Gamut RGB Fine Art Lice Prints on my
Xerox and save the cost of 7 220mil UltraCrome Inks and Fine Art Paper. I
just want to use what I already have -- I color laser with 512meg ram and
one hell of a fast print engine.
As to the quality of the match, I am quite proud of what I see when I print
a reference print to both printers (Press color space). It is quite nice to
SEE Color Management working. And a bit satisfying, Obviously, the Xerox
doesn't have the benefit of the light inks and wonderful screening of the
Epson, but for what it is, I highly recommend a good color laser. Have you
ever timed a 2880x1440 25x38 print x 2? It isn't pretty. By the way, I
asked Xerox One Hundred times, 'Is a replacement in the pipeline?', before
I purchased. I have grown use to being state-of-the-art for every bit of
about two weeks. It's like standard; If you don't like the current one,
wait a little while, another one is right around the corner :-)
My only problem with the device links is that Monaco does not want to
recognize the BestColor SWOP Reference profile or any of the Adobe
Reference Profiles. I know that BestColor's is based on XYZ and not lab.
But I don't know what it doesn't recognize the Adobe Profiles. Adobe even
distributes their profiles on their website for all to use. However, their
is no problem creating Device Links with profiles that have been created by
Monaco. Another way I like to use them is then I have made a profile for
some else and I want/need to simulate what a file will look like when they
print it at their shop.
One other point, RWCM says that you don't need to ink limit a color laser
(there were some exceptions) because they do the ink limiting themselves. I
tested this one and need to limit the ink to 248%. I ran a 40 step
linerization in Monaco and built the profile accordingly. The wired thing
about this laser is I have only profiled two (2) papers a Color Laser
Hammermill sheet and a Glossy Coated sheet. They BOTH have the EXACT same
gamut -- they lay perfectly on top of each other. Who would have guessed.
