This is correct, but again the valid approach is to agitate for it rather than to write off late binding because there is no current solution, as discussed.

Device independence is not about emitting abstract co-ordinates but about having parametrized device characterization formats and software to embed information about local devices into such formats. Once the information is embedded in a useable form, targetting on the desktop is possible for a _range_ of devices, but not for any device out there in the wide world. The OutputIntent (a term which is inherently misleading, drats) is about intelligent targetting as opposed to legacy guesstimating.
