Thats the party line, but I find there are several factors that influence
this. When a new printer is prereleased to a select group of pros, it is
accompanied by profiles, inks, and papers that are all of a given batch, so to speak,
and which tend to perform excellently. Over time, the manufacturing tolerances
in the printers, the inks, and the paper/coatings begin to broaden, and the
existing printers start to change as well. A year or so after the glowing
reviews were written, its possible to have two printers side by side that are
indeed visibly different in their print results, and those results may also vary
from the earlier results due to media and ink variation. This may still be good
enough to make the average consumer happy, but it might not be sufficient for
more demanding uses.
I don't expect my custom profiles to remain valid forever, so it would be a
rather unreasonable expectation for the canned ones...
