Marco,
I found last week when comparing ImagePrint and ColorBurst for color
accuracy, that for example when measuring neutral gray both IP and CB were
not exactly neutral. We used L*a*b* as the metric and on average the a and b
value were in the +1 to + 2 range from zero for IP and the a and b values
were -.05 to -.1 from zero for CB. In normal speak that means the IP gray
is more bluish and the CB gray is more yellowish. Does that mean that both
products are inaccurate. Some what. But I did not find it to be a big
deal. They just work differently.
Also the IP rip has a tremendous amount of color saturation because of
their profiles. For some this is a good thing, because they feel they have
more overhead to create more pleasing colors. For some it is a pain because
you have to desaturate images to achieve exact visual matches so certain
images don9t look fake.
And when ProfileMaker and Monaco Profiler were used to create profiles for
the CB rip the printed results did not show the same amount of saturation
as IP even when we went to the Relative Colorimetric intent. This is not to
say that PM and Monaco are bad products or that CB is an inaccurate rip.
All of these products are very good. I think that is more about the math
in each profiling application and that each profiler is trying to give a
more accurate reproduction than a pleasing color print.
It also became clear that you can use various ripping options and profiling
techniques to make better more saturated profiles and adjust rip settings
like rendering intents to make colors appear over saturated. This process is
very flexible.
My .02 says that if you spent a day or two setting up and tweaking these
rips and their profiles you could produce close to the same visual results.
However, both products will give you good results right out of the box also.
And this is why I said in an previous post that in the process of comparing
rips and color reproductions last week, it became clear that to that each
person has to define what they mean by color accuracy.
In terms of color reproduction and color accuracy, you can create good
results with both products.
