I know Microsoft Word and Color Management are not two words one uses
in the same sentence around polite company, but I found something
interesting that perhaps someone can help solve.
Microsoft Word X for Mac, running on OSX 10.3.3, appears to have some
color management capability after a fashion, but I haven't got a clue
as to what it's thinking.
When importing a TIFF image with attached profiles, Word will read the
profile of the image and transform (convert to profile) upon import.
The color isn't right, but it is transformed and it is consistent
(please see proof of statement below). Should the image NOT have an
embedded profile, the color of the imported image will shift
unpredictably. The question I have is which profile is Word converting
the images into? Is a profile used at all, or is it an auto-levels type
of thing? Essentially, I am trying to discover if I have a hope of
controlling the color output of Word. I would like to use Word to do
mass mailings and want to ensure that logos and other elements print
properly. Otherwise, I guess I'm AppleScripting Quark!
[proof statement is done by importing a single reference image three
times (each file was converted to a different RGB profile, (sRGB,
AdobeRGB, WideGamut)) then saving PDFs from Word using a ColorSync
filter created in ColorSync Utility (all color converstions are off).
Opening the PDF files in Photoshop and checking color numbers with
on-screen densitometer against original TIFF file.]
P.S. -- PDFs from Adobe Illustrator output in same manner are exact
color match to original (which makes sense, because I told ColorSync
not to make any changes) where Word is a bit duller overall.
Thanks!
