I haven't done the comparison for really big prints because I don't
have a source that gives me that much data.
The sharpening is critical, though. I stumbled onto the 480 ppi thing
when I was building a sharpening product, and I was surprised to find
that 480 ppi was worthwhile, because all the theory dictates
otherwise. A couple of RIP vendors have characterized the situation
as "a bug in the Epson driver that creates some 'magic' numbers in
terms of resolution."
Whatever the truth of the matter, I've satisfied myself empirically
that it's a real phenomenon, but you need to apply sharpening that
looks really hideous on screen at actual pixels view to exploit it.
(Which figures-a 1/100th-inch sharpening halo at 480 ppi is almost 5
pixels wide...)

Hi Bruce,
Do you think this would also apply to larger print sizes? I have to down
sample my files to print them at 360 ppi for 16x20s and 20x25s (medium
format scans printed on Epson 10000). I have been using the common
assumption that 360 ppi would yield the best print. I'll have to try it out
for 16x20s at 480 ppi (which would still be a slight downsample, ~260 to
210MB). I was just wondering if you had already done this 360/480
comparison for larger prints. Thanks,

I've seen a benefit to sending 480 ppi to the Epsons if
you're printing fairly small sizes (up to 8x10) you're careful about
sharpening and you have real data for the pixels (no upsampling to get to
480 ppi).
