I don't suggest there is only one way to view this. Some printers are genuinely into making profiles and understand color management. When these printers hand over their profile, there is a genuine feeling of trust that can be established. But what do you make of printers that send csf settings pointing to SWOP Coated 20% as THEIR CMYK profile?

Which in my mind would indicate just the opposite. And what proprietary
information in a profile is really useful to anyone else besides the
printer?
