Dear mo,
Can you point to a color management "prebinding" solution usable right
away in any color managed workflows? Or is your suggestion only a
'conceptual' clarification to guide us, mere mortals, on the road to
illumination?

My god good people.
We can fix this issue with one word.
"prebinding"
Prebinding allows the user to designate or "point to" a device without
the final commitment of such device.
btw. like it is now.
If you point to a device that needs color mgmt conversion down the
line, .....like an Epson, the bind will tell to include the profiles
in the job.
If the bind is geared toward a press or CMYK output "contract device",
the bind tells the files that there is no need to include the
profiles.
It's think for those who can't.
This should not be confused with the......CMYK to CMYK....tweening
process for such press output within the thesis.
process control......IS........capture to output.
