Sure, untagged CMYK. That's the ticket. Worked so well for the years
prior to color-management. Why the heck did we drink this
"color-management Kool-aid" anyway.
Seems a bit odd that on the one hand you can't get profiles or accurate
printing information, yet on the other you can fine-tune your files for
these mystery output processes.
I've seen lots of concurrence about how printers should print. I
haven't seen any two of the contributors on this list agree on how
files should be submitted. That's the reality of the pre-press
environment. You deal with whatever gets tossed your way. And, yes,
there are those that are working on those standards. How many groups,
now? DISC, DDAP, ECI, IFRA, FOGRA, CGATS.
Roger, you were quoting a portion of the SWOP handbook - doesn't that
quote refer to SWOP qualified proofs? SWOP was developed before color
characterization was widely generated or available. And colorimetric
data are not readily generated/gathered press-side. You wouldn't know
that you were in SWOP conformance until you could measure an IT8 later.
Yes, you could infer from press performance, but that would make
characterization runs pretty sticky.
