Title: Re: client and monitor proofing
requested
Hello Doug -
If you conceptually think of the monitor as a transparency and
the offset reproduction as a C print, you can draw the conclusion that
there is a real relationship between a calibrated and profiled monitor
(with soft proofing turned on) and a calibrated and profiled print
output.
Furthermore, the info palette in Photoshop will speak volumes to
the accuracy of neutrals and color mixes. As to viewing sharpness,
simply look at the edge detail in specular highlights, just like we do
in analog prints.
A short lesson in digital image evaluation is a critical part of
professionalism as photographers and as printers. There are many who
monitor the list and offer training services. If you are west coast
based, you might find out who might either be in your area or
travelling through in the next few weeks.
Please be encouraged that the desktop has empowered us to have
more control over our craft. That means additional education, but then
again education is a GOOD thing.

Is it not true that viewing images on
screen provides little ultimate guarantee as to how the images will
print either in tone or how they will render in sharpness?
Is this as simple as 'call me when you have the hard proofs?....or
does this response come across as pedantic or elitist?
Best,
