No, it is not just you. That is proper colour management.
I don't remember who said it but someone on this forum had this quote: "Colour management is not process control or colour correction, it is predictability." And I agree with that.
However there are cases in which we (as a printer) must use it as a colour correction tool. For example, when the content creator refuses to separate the files as per our press profiles. Or, when the client supplies the scans and their own proofs (or previous printing done elsewhere). If the files with embedded profiles do not match their proofs, we are forced to "fix" the files.
