This is the position I find myself in, as well.
I have high hopes of finding concrete answers to this question during
the "What to Do When Someone is NOT ColorManaged" session at this
year's GATF Colour Management Conference.
That's the manufacturing model that made color management necessary.
I say you vote/advocate/problem-solve with your money. From the
perspective of the creatives you can:
1) Patronize those printers who are color-managed. This way you push
the hold-outs either to adopt the technology or out of business.
2) Patronize those printers who are not color-managed. This way you
reward those who thumb their noses at the technology, and you get to
pay for all those extra proofs, all the extra time spent, all the extra
paper, all the inefficiency associated with this camp.
