Real world stuff once again in small town america.....
I received a call yesterday from a graphic designer who is preparing a
printed directory containing 8 of my images from a job I did for a
client this summer.
In his call he said "would you mind coming in and looking at your
images on screen, we can't seem to get them to work"
I did just that - - - here is what I found:
- iMac CRT's which renders EXTREMELY dark compared to same image on my
TiBook side by side.
- Sitting by large open windows with strong overhead fluorescent
lamping - yikes!
- No Monitor Profiling done on iMac. (well ok, they said someone once
used the included monitor calibrate utility to set the monitor up...
was that a 12% margin of error in RWCM?)
-They are using Photoshop 5.x (in the Color Settings or Setup they
have AdobeRGB as RGB (that is fine as my images are embedded as such
but they have Generic CMYK as CMYK, Not even SWOP or any other
profiles in this machine?@??)
-They are using Quark 4.1 (in Color Settings CM is turned OFF, er not
ticked)
-They are sending this to a closed-loop shop locally which I shall call
right now)
Here is the upshot. They are simply dropping my RGB files into Quark
and they print terribly light and flat.
It is as though my AdobeRGB files are being rendered as GenericRGB or
some small space equivalent. What actually happens in 4.1 as RGB TIF's
are simply dropped in?
OK. I have my TiBook with me so I open it up and pop the image open in
CS. I have this puppy profiled using EyeMatch 3.0 and my trusty EyeOne
Display. The same image is vibrant, richly rendered and full of
tonality as it is shot to a four stop range. Perfect candidate for
offset printing by my mind as there are no out of gamut color in this
particular image.
Fine. The image looks great on my machine. It looks totally dark on
his iMac but prints wholly light and washed out. He is frustrated at
the time wasted trying to make my images look good.
Now you would think as a CM junkie I would have the answer for him but
I don't. I theorize that the images is being rendered in some small
space upon dropping into Quark but I am not certain.
One thing is clear. He is not using good CM techniques, has not
profiled his monitors, is using out of date software, etc..
The fly in the ointment is that many of the other images from Getty
print just fine They came to him already in some flavor of CMYK. Are
they printing better simply because they are already in CMYK?
What is actually happening to my AdobeRGB file as it is dropped into
Quark 4.1? Is it converted to GenericRGB?
I need to respond to him by noon today.
Thanks all,
Doug Walker, FP

PS. It is hard to speak plainly about clients CM shortcomings without
offending them. This is an art in itself.
