Hi Doug and list -
I think that converting from Working Space to Working Space has
limited and specific uses. One correct use is to convert from a
larger gamut Working Space to sRGB, because that is the
Walmart/Frontier minilab requirement.
In prepress, it is much better to convert to a known CMYK space so
that the folks on the other side of the digital curtain can
communicate on their end. Many non-ICC classically trained
individuals know how to handle USWebCoatedSWOP better than any other
gamut.
If the printer has a unique/custom output profile, that is the best
alternative. Even after converting to CMYK, the photographer must be
aware that high key and low key photos may require some value
adjustments. A full RGB gamut highlight or shadow might look a bit
muddy after the CMYK conversion.
Sometimes prepress pros will sweat a 5% correction to maintain the
integrity of what the photographer is trying to communicate. This is
where the science merges with the art. That is also why rendering
intents are offered in the ICC world.
In general, full range RGBs separate nicely through the correct CMYK
conversion using correct ICC profiling and either perceptual or
relative colorimetric rendering. If your designer (or print house)
does not understand this, it is prudent to resort to plan "B", which
is to convert to CMYK prior to handing the files off.
If you are uncomfortable with the CMYK conversion, then try
outsourcing to a high-end service bureau. Many prepress houses can
assist with the CMYK conversion on the high key/low key images,
should that become a concern.

Why couldn't they open in my Working Space without manually
converting to their working space. Isn't this what we are striving
for? Once opened they could convert to their proofer or press
flavor of CMYK right?
This may be a little off the subject but it just so happens that
Im dealing with a photographer that we were paying to color correct
all of the photos that he is taking for us. After we get them we
are having to go back after the conversion process and color
correct them again.
From your background, do you have any incite on this subject?
I think it is on topic. But again, if the photographer is CM'd, and
you provide him with a proofer or press profile, why would one need
to go back and forth.
Again, I am probably missing something. Please share a bit more.
In my case earlier the designer was simply dropping in an AdobeRGB
into Quark 4.1 and finding terrible results. We are now having them
Convert the originals to US Web Coated SWOP v2 and they are printing
just fine.
