Hello Mark and list -
There are many criteria for choosing monitor calibration tools. This
is my list.
Going for a "Reference Display" concept (similar to that which Barco
monitors have held)? The new Eizo and NEC/Mitsubishi larger gamut
screens will clearly fall into this category. Existing monitor
options include the top of the line Sony and NEC/Mitsubisi(LaCie too)
CRTs as well as existing Eizo and newer Cinema Display LCDs.
DDC enabled? (monitor has an embedded computer chip to talk to the
calibration software on the PC/Mac)
If Sony Artisan, then use bundled software.
Best choice for other monitors: basICColor display with DDC cable and
Gretag Macbeth EyeOne Pro. This provides the most scientific approach
to accuracy. It also helps a room full of workstations to achieve
near matching.
High End LCD? (over $1000)
If Eizo, then use its software and Gretag Macbeth EyeOne Pro. If
another flat panel then use basICColor software and Gretag Macbeth
EyeOne Pro. These options yield the very best tonal reproduction in
the gray scale plus the highest level of accuracy in the color
regions.
--------
Next up:
Better quality CRTs and LCDs.
i.e. Middle range Sony, NEC/Mitsubishi, Upper range Dell, Upper range
CRTs over 3 years old but less than 5 years old.
Money is an issue. Quality does not need to be as accurate as in
previous category.
1) EyeOne Display with EyeOne Match
2) Spyder2 Pro
3) Optix XR Pro
All of these CM software/hardware bundles offer a great improvement
over their forebears.
At the end of the day, if the monitor is not high end, the results
will only be as good as the display limitations. It is important when
calibrating these devices to use the feedback provided to see if any
one gun R,G,B is at the edge of its life (or beyond). Alert
management to the issue. If a fixed green gun (as in slider color
temp systems) is your best calibration tool, then these monitors are
also suspect and should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
--------
Bottom of the list:
Tibooks, Laptops, iMacs, entry level CRTs and LCDs
Go for a custom video card LUT using any of the above products and
recognize that the color accuracy of the display will never achieve
high quality soft proofing. These monitors all have a purpose, but
not at the high end. While the ICC profiling is important, these
displays are a wobbly platform - if color is being critically
evaluated.
Hope this helps.

Greetings all,
I am looking for some advice on purchasing new professional
level monitor calibrating/profiling soft/hardware (mainly Mac OS X
based). I have been talking to many sales people, but I would like
some feedback from professionals who have used various packages. I
would like something that would allow some level of "tweaking" of
the profile (if possible), CRT & LCD capabilities and multi station
licensing. At this point, I can only afford a colorimeter, not a
spectrophotometer. Many thanks for your assistance.
