Subject: Atkinson Press Breakthrough
I have been printing using Creo Staccato screening since 1999. I may
have been the first paying customer to use this version of Creo
screening. For the first year I printed with 20.1 micron dots,
switching to 10 micron dots as soon as it was available.
The process was still in Beta when I started using it. It is now
becoming somewhat mainstream. In fact Creo has purchased thousands of
copies of many of my publications to use for their marketing and sales
efforts, and I have been somewhat of an evangelist for their product.
BTW, my business (Cosgrove Editions) publishes a regional source book
for photographers in the Pacific Northwest, and we do scanning,
prepress and print production/supervision for brochures and coffee
table photography books. We have won 2 Bennies and one 'Best of the
Best' for printing with 4-color Stochastic screening.
For six years I have been creating separations with up to 380% TAC on
gloss coated sheets. Starting press wet densities are typically C & M =
185, Y = 130, K = 225. The result is an expanded gamut, with incredibly
dense blacks and an expanded tonal range.
It takes excellent pressmen, on relatively new presses, to maintain the
delicate balance between water and ink to obtain these densities. There
are numerous other problems that have to be overcome such as colors
shifting due to wet trapping. These problems can only be overcome by
incredibly knowledgeable prepress specialists running the prepress
departments at the print shops I work with. They know how to finesse
the plate curves to enable printing at such high densities.
My point is that printing with such high densities, resulting in an
expanded gamut, in not new. It is not common, and I would guess that
not many printers would be up to the task. However, I do know a few in
the Northwest US, and one in Singapore. I'd be happy to share if you'd
like to contact me off line. Of course, I'm always looking for clients
who need 'custom' prepress services.
Cheers,
Dick Busher
