Mike,
Indeed the removal/replacement of the LC and LM inks have no impact in
halftone proofing workflow. When dealing with Halftone dots there is not
really any need for the lighter colors.
In a photographic workflow the impact is minimal, only a trained eye can
spot any degrading in smoothness and only in certain blue gradients.
It does not take a trained eye to see the significant difference in color
vibrancy and the much larger colorgamut. The benefits are very obvious, more
vibrant Red, Orange, Purple and Green colors and more natural skintones.
You have to keep in mind that when these light inks were introduced the
industry was using the generation of ink Jet printers such as the Epson
7000.
Since then two significant improvements have been done on the the printhead
technology addressing the same issue and making these inks less important.
Variable droplet is one and smaller droplets is the other.
Our Extrachrome inks make up for the removal of these two inks.
Orange is one of the colors we use and that ensures smooth skintones, that
was one of the problematic issues the light colors addressed.
Plus it enables printing of colors such as the color of the sunflower that
traditionally turns out dirty with a brown tinge on normal printers.
Colorful regards,
Hugo Kristinsson
