I am always amused by those who say that metameric effects always
exist in prints so there's no sense worrying about them.
For photographers, there are at least two valid approaches, which
aren't even mutually exclusive, to deal with these effects:
1) choose a printer/paper/ink (and RIP/driver) combination that
minimizes these effects under the range of lighting types that matter
to you (or your client) -- that range is going to be finite in the
real world, hence you do have a shot at a practical (if not
universal) solution
2) choose the lighting type that is most important (if you know it)
and aim your prints for that lighting from the outset
There is no panacea, but there is common sense (or there should be).
Even though, according to Mark Twain, there is nothing common about
it.
