I think what you're talking about here is really "spectral matching" failure,
not "metamerism" failure. Most available color correction systems are tristimulus
match systems, so they are only going to match well under the intended illuminant
(Often the D50 of the measuring instrument, assuming FWA doesn't come into it).
If the spectral response of the reproduction is similar to the original you
are trying to match, then the results will be good over a broader set of illuminants.
Another way of putting it is that a proof on an inkjet will match a press sheet
over a broader range of illuminants, if the spectral characteristics of the inks
on the two devices are similar.
