I am no mood to pay more for a RIP CD as I did for a printer thank you!
The facts are that the printer manufacturers are good at making print
engines, but aren't as expert as the RIP vendors at controlling the
pixel values (yet). The printer vendors subsidize their product costs by
taxing ink at a high rate, while the RIP vendors have to make their
money up front.
Bottom line, there is no logical reason not to pay more for the RIP than
the printer, if that is where the "magic" is, that makes the overall
system work properly. It's easy to be impressed by all the mechanics of
the thing that the colored paper comes out of, but it's important to
keep in mind that there's more to an overall system than that.
Basically, a good rip can make almost any printer look good. A bad
RIP or print driver will make every printer look bad. What does that
tell you about what's going on ?
