I've got the CG19 w/hood in the studio for in-house evaluation. Current
monitor is an aging LaCie 22II which has delivered great results for 3
years.
Inital impressions: Great sharpness and the small footprint really makes me
want this to work. Calibrated to 6500/2.2 @105cd/m I get smooth b/w
gradients (in RGB mode) with little banding in the shadow end (better than
the LaCie). The same gradient viewed in grayscale mode shows more pronounced
banding in the shadows however ( slightly worse than the LaCie). Using RGB
curves I can see separation from 0/0/0 at 3/3/3 (if I try really hard) but
definitely at 5/5/5. Grays are neutral throughout. I ran both both tests
softproofing with Monitor RGB in PS and then again using the Color Navigator
generated profile. Similar results.
Three questions:
1. At what luminance are you guys running your LCDs? Is it just a matter of
what the monitor can sustain over time or is there an optimum setting for
max shadow detail?
2. In identical PS working spaces I can differentiate shadow separation
between 99%K and 100%K on my Lacie. With the Eizo, it's 97% and 100%K. With
a RIP and quadtone inks I can print 98% on 100%K so if I can print it I need
to see it on the monitor. Is a difference this slight something that
should/can be compensated for by setting a custom grayscale gamma working
space? Or do I just forget about the slight loss in shadow detail (CRT vs
LCD technology).
3. On OS X are others finding that Color Navigator takes about 40 seconds to
launch?
Thanks
