An interesting aspect of camera profiling brought to light at CIC12,
was that profiling with a test chart is generally a difficult/poor
way of doing it. It appears that it's easier/more accurate to
use near monochromatic color references to determine a camera
RGB to CIE conversion matrix. HP showed a prototype camera
"test chart" that consisted of "patches" that were actually
LED sources behind diffusers. The LEDs were arranged to be
from Infra Red to UV wavelengths as well as some grey "patches".
HP are intending to use this technique to individually profile
their cameras on the production line.
[It sounds like a neat project to duplicate the HP calibration
device. A summer holiday project perhaps ?]
