Hello everyone,
Our design department is at a crossroads regarding our color laser printer;
and I'm thinking it would be wise to seek out the advice of those with color
management experience/expertise:
We currently have a Xerox 7700DN and, quite frankly, we have been less than
thrilled with its overall performance in regards to color accuracy and
consistency. However, we may actually be in a position to purchase a new
printer in the near future. So my question is: does anyone on the list have
any recommendations for a color laser printer? If there are any models out
there that offer reasonable color quality, consistency, and manageability;
then we'd appreciate the information.
However.
To be honest, our department does not have a substantial color management
process in place. We do not have the ability to profile any of our equipment
(monitors, scanners, or printers). So historically we've relied on whatever
factory color management abilities our equipment and software have when they
come "out of the box."
So this raises the question as to whether it would make more sense to invest
in an actual color management process rather than to purchase a new color
printer. If we ignore implementing dedicated color management procedures (
profiling, etc) are we simply prolonging a saga of frustration with the
accuracy and consistency of color reproduction between our displays and our
printer regardless of which printer we purchase.
Part of what I'm up against in my department is a prevailing mindset that
"making any additional investments for color management shouldn't be
necessary". I've been sensing a strong sentiment that consistent color
should be a natural by-product of spending $$$ on a quality laser printer,
quality monitors (Apple LCD cinema displays), and new computers (Apple G5s)
Just plug them all together, push a button, and consistent color should just
happen naturally. But everything I've studied regarding color management
tells me it's not necessarily as simple as all that.
I'd appreciate any advice on what our best course of action ought to be.
Thanks,
Dean
