That could be a good estimate for unidirectional, yes. 9600 and 7600 are
identical speed wise. I may have been a tad optimistic, but its not too
bad at bi-directional...I'll get out my stop watch on the next press
form we output.

Har! I haven't noticed banding being a HUGE issue at bi-directional on
the 76/9600 with the Rip that will remain nameless, unless there are
predominant solid colors, but we've had to switch to unidirectional
before. On the Epson 4000, we run everything unidirectional...our
printer calibrations are more stable that way and the 4000 is faster
anyway. Oddly enough switching from uni to bidirectional causes a pretty
large shift in the accuracy of out printer calibrations on the 4000, but
not so on the 76/9600's, but we use different paper in those.
Here's a print speed chart from Epson UK:
Print Engine Speed
Up to 17.8m2/hr (Plain paper, economy mode - double matte black
configuration)
A0 size (46.81 x 33.11):
About 3.5 minutes (360x360dpi, Economy Mode, Plain Paper)
About 6.0 minutes (360x360dpi, Speed Mode, Plain Paper)
About 13.5 minutes (720x360dpi, Quality Mode, Plain Paper)
About 13.5 minutes (360x720dpi, Speed Mode, Premium Glossy Photo Paper)
About 16.5 minutes (360x720dpi, Quality Mode, Doubleweight Matte Paper)
About 24 minutes (720x720dpi, Quality Mode, Premium Glossy Photo Paper)
About 46 minutes (1440x720dpi, Advanced Photo, Premium Glossy Photo
Paper)
About 102 minutes (2880x1440dpi, Advanced Photo 2880, Premium Glossy
Photo Paper)

Hmmm....I don't know. If the 9600 is anything like the speed of a 7600,
which I think it is, I think you'd be looking at closer to 35-45 min.
(720dpi, uni-directional). Last test I did on a 7600, a 20x24" proof
took something like 23 min. to print at 720dpi, 50+ min. at 1440dpi.
I've always stuck to using uni-directional printing to avoid the
possibility of vertical banding, particularly with...well, I won't name
the RIP!
The print time at 2880dpi is better measured in hours, not minutes!
If you're looking for productivity, better look at the 10600 instead of
either the 76/9600 printers. 10600 is on the order of 2-2.5 times
faster.
Later,
Terry
