L* calibration

Jon - isn't L* the equivalent of so called "equal brightness" calibration
that LVT used since 1986? (Equal brightness meaning perceptually equal
brightness changes between gray scale steps). I believe the L* curve in the
Solitaire film recorder manual was the equivalent of the LVT equal
brightness curve.
