Hi Roger,
L* is a visually linear luminance response curve, as opposed to (any)
gamma. If you calibrate your monitor to a gamma function, you compress
RGB values on one end and expand them in another area. This can result
in banding, if you work in an 8-bit environment. L* calibration will
avoid these effects and will also be beneficial for hardware (10-bit
LUT) calibratable monitors like EIZO or NEC-Mitsubishi.
An L* calibration will best be accompanied by an L* working space. You
can download LStar-RGB from www.lstarrgb.com. It has the gamut of
eciRGB and an L* response curve.
Best regards,
Karl Koch

Starting with a launch at the GATF color conference in less than two
weeks, basICColor products, including L* display will have a strong
US presence. While the engines under the hood are similar, basICColor
has some major monitor manufacturer endorsements.
Further info will be available in 2 weeks.

Can you give some details on the L* calibration? I understand it's an
alternative to gamma calibration.
