(1) You need be careful about interpreting Dan Margulis' test.
(2) What is being scanned? ... a reflective print? ... film?
I have my own doubts as to the utility of scanning prints with highbit
depth, but, for myself, I have demonstrated its utility for scanning the
higher dynamic range of film. For example, take a sunset scene, in which
the sunset is dramatic but the subject person is backlit and under-exposed.
I wanted brighten the subject, while keeping the sunset dramatic, ... or
expose the scan for the subjet, and then make the sunset dramatic again.
The required degree of tonal ajustment in either case posterized the
histogram with 8bit data, but created smooth histograms with 12bit data.
I have no idea why Dan's test insists on ^not^ working with the original
highbit data, ... to me, there inlies the technique's usefulness.
