I'm not necessarily agreeing with Dan, but he would say that what the
histogram tells you vs. what's actually visible in the final result is
irrelavent. It can easily be proven that 16bit produces a nicer
histogram but it's unclear how "bad" a histogram has to look till it
becomes visually noticeable in print.
Regardless, I would say that with the cheap price of processing power
and hard drive space, why NOT capture the high-bit data?
