Not knowing how many additional edits on the data, or color space
conversions may be conducted, the histogram today and the histogram tomorrow
might be vastly different. So high bit is insurance if nothing else. We also
don't know how many output devices in the future may be able to use that
additional data. I know the ImagePrint RIP can and does use more than 8-bits
per color if provided. While Dan may be right that a press might never be
able to use the additional data, it's quite possible the file will go
elsewhere for output. Having a strictly press frame of mind isn't a very
flexible way of handling data that might be used elsewhere today or in the
future. Why paint yourself into a corner?
