There's no need for "hacking" if the Macs are running Panther. You can use AppleScript:
set bValue to 0.8
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.displays"
end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences"
tell slider 1 of group 2 of tab group 1 of window 1 to set value to bValue
end tell
tell application "System Preferences" to quit
The slider value runs from 0-1.
If you have set the slider manually and want to know what the numerical value is then use:
tell slider 1 of group 2 of tab group 1 of window 1 to set x to value
And then add an “x” to the end of the script or “display dialog x”.
