This isn't strictly colorsync, hence my apologies in advance.
I print from OSX 10.3.7 to several postscript laser printers, all
networked. Particularly from PowerPoint, the printing is VERY slow.
The printers are set up with either LPR or AppleTalk from PrintCenter
(tried both, actually, using static IP addresses for LPR).
I noticed that the same printers connected by USB to a PC print MUCH
faster (like 10X even, maybe) for same files, from PowerPoint. This
of course made me wonder.
I installed the latest USB drivers on Mac and tried again from the
Mac with said printers attached with USB (the printer does not have
USB2, but the Mac actually does -- so that's not the issue). However,
the printing was again slow, just like over the network, and much
slower than PC with USB...
The only option I have left is a CUPS driver for the Mac, which I
know nothing about (downloaded from Brother). I sort of am worried
this will break other things in my system, but if someone out there
thinks it's worth a shot, I'm game (especially if it can be
uninstalled). [I have found OS X 10.3.x with x>5 to react negatively
to system additions of several flavors, and don't really want to
waste more time than I have already troubleshooting and pulling out
of hair -- I'm waiting for OS X 10.4 to upgrade the OS at this point.]
Otherwise, if anyone has any thoughts on why PowerPoint prints so
much more slowly from Mac than from PC, I'd be grateful for any
suggestions.
Armand
