When we first got our 9600 we ran it at 720 bidirectional through GMG,
as we did our 7600, and the proofs looked great with almost zero
banding. As time went by, banding began to rear its head despite regular
cleaning cycles/alignments and we switched it to 720 unidirectinal, and
then to 1440 as it got worse. After getting banding and alignment issues
that were not correctable through normal means, we recently had the unit
serviced and the printhead replaced. According to the service tech,
after a while cleaning of the nozzles can become less effective as
components of the wiper assembly and cleaning unit wear out, in some
cases preventing a good seal around the nozzles during cleaning. This
can result in crud building up around the nozzles that cause
deflections. Anyway, the result is that our 9600 prints like new and
we're back to 720 bidirectional, which saves an incredible amount of
time as you can imagine
