My two cents for the controversial theme of 16 bits versus 8 bits.
First statement: digital images ARE delicate flowers. All (well, most
of them) photographers seem at their first reaction to digital they
have reached a sort of nirvana of the editing process. We all know:
curves, shadows, hi-lights, color, gamma... etc stacked one over
another until we hit the wall of reality in terms of gamut (and / or
dynamic range) of the output devices.
So we are forced to learn to keep our editing to the strictly needed to
reach the desired "mood"? (in terms of psychological rendering intent
of the author) of the photograph. No more, no less. In other words no
one could make a snow take a perfect example of low key wether it was
16 or 8 bits. So I learned the hard way to go back to the take time and
expose properly and restrain unrealistic expectations on the "digital
magic". That said I must add that like most of you (I suppose) don' t
have a camera capable of taking 16 bits (not even raw). Would I like to
have such a device? of course yes even knowing that most of the takes
won't be much better (probable indeed indistinguishable in print) than
their 8 bits equivalents. And finally... the prints. They are all 8
bits so we'd better learn to fit our motiv within the limits that sort
of digital canvas palette. Here again we are in the reign of subjective
evaluation and have to take our decision on what's better more detail
in the lights, shadows at the cost of loosing gray levels (risk of
visible posterization) or tonal range integrity. No one could give an
"a priory" answer and each photo have to be evaluated independently.
Conclusion: forget our dreams of a digital "free launch" in the ancient
and noble art of capturing the world out there.
Happy shooting
