If I understand this correctly, floating point would allow the use of
more of the bit space for accuracy even if the numbers are small.
That is accurate. For example, I am looking at a highlight that would
be blown out in 8 bit (all 255s), as well as in 16 bit (all 32768s),
but holds detail in 32 bit (8.295, 10.42, 12.50) As an index, 0.000 is
black.
BTW, and maybe this would provide a break in the thread, how can
16-bit provide overhead if the largest value in the original image
fills the bits?
The only critical issue with the 8 vs 16 vs 32 debate is identifying
the level of accuracy the end customer is willing to pay for (or would
like - even if he can't pay for it. . . )
