If I understand this correctly, floating point would allow the use of more of the bit space for accuracy even if the numbers are small.

If your largest value fills the bit I'd guess there's no advantage.

BTW, and maybe this would provide a break in the thread, how can 16-bit provide overhead if the largest value in the original image fills the bits?
