Really, do you call "bullshit" profanity? What world do you live in?
That mild characterization of invalidity does not bother me when used
that way, although I concede that its not a very professional
verbalization.
By the way in my work I'm all for capturing as much data in an original
image as possible, since I can select or compress later. 16 bits gives
me more latitude in what I can do with an image. My images are not
entirely real-world however, as they are made with electron
illumination. This kind of illumination is not always so well
behaved--the overall image contrast can be high while detail contrast
may be quite low. It helps to have more bits because there can be so
much of an illumination range. For the majority of images however,
where the subject matter does not present such great range, I find 8
bits can work very well, if I take care to fit the illumination range
to the full dynamic range of the photomultiplier electronics and the
A/D converter.

While in concept the 8 vs 16 bit discussion is not a Colorsync issue, I
found it extremely useful to learn how high end pros came down on both
sides of the fence. I agree with Roger, that there is no reason to
pound those posting to the thread. . . and especially no reason to use
profanity on the list.
The world is intriguing because of diversity. Learning how others think
helps us to better assist those whose goals may diverge from our field
of view. The Colorsync list is a wonderful service to us so that in
turn we may provide a professional service to others.
At the end of the day I want to go home knowing that I have met the
customers' needs by not only contributing accurate support, but also
listening to and achieving the goals those individuals have set for me.
The dialogue in this list contributes toward that exercise.

Amen to that, Jon. While the main thrust of this thread was 8 bit vs 16 bit,
which, on the surface looked like like just another 'dry' and boring
programming concept, we saw that there's a lot of color issues involved, as
most posts revealed. I personally found it a fantastic educational
experience (but I admit I'm biased towards continuously learning about
color). I particularely appreciated seeing how each list members's point of
view drew from their own experiences which quickly broaden the discussion to
issued like gradation, banding and device responses. It's nice and healthy
to be able to challenge each other's opinions in the open environment that
this list provides -- thank you Apple! I know I personally learnt an awfull
lot from this thread and I want to thank EVERYONE who willingly and openly
contributed their knowledge and point of views.
