I just want to be able (at this point) to print out
an excellent portfolio, of my beautifully retouched
images.
Frustrated with the Epson 1280, right now,
am finding it a Herculean task to even find profiles
and paper which work well with it, on Tiger.
(anyone on this list even remember the 1280?)
Should I even spend money on a rip for it?
OR should I give up the 1280,
and buy WHICH printer
with WHICH RIP, that won't break the bank?
I don't have much extra cash at the moment,
and need to get my portfolio out there.
But I also want to think in terms of the next few
years.
Diana,
Your main concern seems to be color management. Like Tyler Boley I also
wonder whether you need a RIP at all. If the print size is sufficient
you could buy an Epson 2400 which is a big step forward compared to the
1280 in archival quality of the prints, better consistency and it has
comparable gamut to the 1280 dye inks. Next to color it already delivers
excellent B&W prints that can be improved up on with a cheap B&W RIP
like QTR (50$). If your budget allows other purchases I think you will
be better served with an "RGB" printer profiling packet and a
Spectrometer than with a RIP. Most of the time that includes monitor
calibration software as well. If you need other functions of a RIP like
nesting etc you could solve that with Qimage but that requires the use
of a Windows system or alike as a printer server.
