'gamt' tag

I'm viewing a profile's gamut in the Colorsync utility via the gamt tag.
Comparing the gamuts of two profiles created with the same data, I
notice that a Gretag gamut appears much larger and smoother when viewed
through this tag (gamt) than the Monaco gamut, which is very wavy and
much smaller. I assume the size is due to Gretags reported 16 bit, PCS
to gamut check table, while a Monaco profile shows an 8-bit, PCS to
gamut check table, but why is the latter so wavy? I selected 16 color
values when creating the Monaco profile...am I misunderstanding the
point of this feature in Monaco? I understand that this tag gives
information on out of gamut colors, but I have a hard time interpreting
it.
