I found that the gamut tag was so inconsistently created in profiles (and not well documented in the 2.x spec) that I was unable to think of a single reason why I would want to rely on its information. At the time Chris Cox mentioned that Adobe had come to the same conclusions and so I developed the gamut boundary algorithms that became ColorThink's 2 and 3D graphing...
As far as I know it is now better documented in the v4 spec but who knows when that will actually show up in better gamut tags....
