Illustrator and InDeisgn CS2 does have LAB based Pantone libraries,
just like Photoshop has for a number of versions now. But by default,
the legacy behavior of using the CMYK equivalents previewed to screen
is in effect. In the case of building a multichannel file with a spot
channel, and saving out as DCS 2.0, I think the problem is with
Photoshop's generation of the DCS preview, which his what Illustrator
depends on for displaying the placed DCS file. When I build a DCS
file with no preview, and place it in Illustrator, I get just a
placeholder box. No image is drawn, so that's why I think Illustrator
depends on the preview in the DCS file.
If it rendered its own preview from the DCS file itself, there'd be a
chance it would use LAB values for the specified spot channels if a.)
Photoshop included the LAB values in the DCS file instead of CMYK
values, and from what I can tell its inserting CMYK alternates into
the DCS file; b.) if Illustrator were set to use LAB values instead
of CMYK values.
