But what if the client has carefully crafted the separations to optimize the black channel? Convert, and bingo! all that work is trashed.
And what if there is no embedded profile? (Many people suggest not embedding a profile to avoid unwanted conversions.) Will you still convert, and if so, from WHAT assumed source profile?
It would seem as though at least if you're trying to second-guess the total ink limit, you should use a Device Link profile to retain the black plate.
How would you suggest a client communicate that he/she does NOT want this to happen, assuming they may not expect their files to be converted?
I would hope you'd be proactively supplying every client with your profile and telling them to use it to create their CMYK. Not that that will address the issues of different images requiring different black generation, unless you're supplying a suite of profiles.

If it's yellow and I don't like it yellow then I'll take out some yellow. But what if the client liked the yellow, well we all have been there. Mostly I use converting to My profile to adjust the total ink limit so all images have the same limit, makes for happier pressmen.
