Does anyone know the approximate ambient light temp of a typical Duratrans
box?
--------------------
There isn't a typical Duratrans box. They come in all flavors, even with
tungsten spotlights for many portable displays. Also, many inkjet trans
media change their color depending on how much front vs. back light is used,
one side being much bluer than the other.
Now don't laugh. Recognizing that such a profile is never going to be
perfect for the above mentioned reasons and probably many others, I devised
a method that yields pretty good success. Essentially, I scanned a
Hutchcolor scanner target and then the Duratrans using my BetterLight setup
in the studio. They were taped to clear plastic and I made sure that the
lighting was even and the same for both, masking around the subjects to
control flare wherever necessary. I assigned the scanner profile I obtained
from the target to the Duratrans and then converted it to be printed it on
an Epson printer to obtain reflective patches to read back into my profiling
software. One has to pay attention to balancing white points and to use
absolute intent where necessary, but the darn thing works well enough to use
reliably.
