I was just reading parts of HPs manual for the 9500. The printer can

What is the "RGB or CMYK mode" you refer to? Chris's point was exactly
that any given printer is either registered as CMYK *or* as RGB
printer? (<Sigh> My head feels dizzy ..)
which is the "dumb and hopefully repeatable" mode intended for use
with application or system based ICC colormanaged workflows.
According to Apple, "Device" means that ColorSync disregards any
printer profile and sends the data in a generic color space, assuming
the printer provides color management. Sounds like the contrary to
"system based ICC workflow" (which I think ColorSync tries to be).
These settings are available through the manual options in the Color
matching pop up in the print menu, or so they say. What is not
explicitly clear is that these setting as all available in both the
Windows and Mac drivers. Uli, do you see 3 RGB options, 5 CMYK
options, plus halftone and neutral gray options?
Hm, the "Device" switch is in the Apple provided "ColorSync" menu.
There are additional options in the HP provided "Color Options" menu.
Separated for Text, Graphics, and Photographs, I see 3 RGB options
(Default, Glossy, Device) [maybe you referred to this "Device"
setting], 2 Halftone (Black Only - 4 Colors) and 2 Neutral Gray
(Detailled - Smoothed) options. I don't see any CMYK option at all.
Again my confusion: if a printer can only be RGB *or* CMYK, why offer
RGB *and* CMYK options?
(Of course, why - as in my case - offer RGB options at all (but no CMYK
options) if the printer can be used only with CMYK?)
According to HP Automatic assumes the file is sRGB.
What "Automatic" do you refer to? I find no such setting here.
You could try sending a sRGB file, but then you'd be limited to RGB
and could not make your own profile.
So is "Automatic" something similar to "Device"?
Bye
Uli
