Hi Michael,
ANSI CGATS call for black backing when measuring density and effective
dot area. This applies to SWOP, and GRACOL specifications.
Most color scientists agree that spectral measurements for profiling
purposes should be made with a white background. Some suggest that you
use three blank sheets of the same paper you are profiling to back the
test form. This is typical of the way the printed sheet will be viewed.

When measuring various
paper whites, I notice that what the
paper is sitting on has a strong influence on the resulting
measurement.
I’m using a Spectrolino with UV filter and Gretag MeasureTool. For
example, I get a different reading when measuring a piece of paper if
it is
sitting on some Bainbridge Pure White mat board (nearly neutral) vs. on
some
Epson Premium Luster (more blue) vs. on my desk top (dark reddish brown
wood).
I also recall that when I
purchased the Spectroscan table
which I use for profiling, there were two options: one with a white base and one
with a
black base. I have the white base.
So, is there a standard
for what the paper being measured
should be sitting on?
Thanks,
Michael
